About
Welcome to A-KID-EMIA! This is a blog/podcast on work-life balance for academics. It focuses on lessons from parents that can benefit all scholars, whether they have children or not. As it turns out, years spent in the Ivory Tower do not automatically translate into the knowledge, skills, and habits necessary to balance intellectual work with a robust personal life. Far from an osmotic process, it’s an achievement that demands serious reflection and concerted effort. Having kids presents some of the clearest examples of this ubiquitous challenge, making the solutions promising for everybody, even those who are not parents.
A-KID-EMIA is hosted by Charlotte Duffee, a mom of five, postdoc at UNC-Chapel Hill/Stanford, and researcher at the Harvard Human Flourishing Program. In Posts, she shares her own work-life balance solutions as a young parent and a junior scholar. Podcast episodes query scholars from across the academy who have mastered work-life balance at different professional junctures, in various job positions, at diverse institutions, and under a panoply of life circumstances.
A-KID-EMIA has three foci, dubbed ‘The Three S’s’:
Schedules: Short, medium, and long-term planning at various stages of professional and parental life;
Strategies: Virtues and tactics for getting the most out of our time, both at work and at home;
Sanity: Methods for defending rest and achieving a happy life.
