About

Welcome to A-KID-EMIA! This is a blog/podcast on parental flourishing for scholars with kids. As it turns out, years spent in the Ivory Tower do not automatically translate into the knowledge, skills, and habits necessary to balance intellectual work with family life. Far from an osmotic process, it’s an achievement that takes serious and concerted effort. A-KID-EMIA has three foci, dubbed ‘The Three S’s’:

  1. Schedules: Short, medium, and long-term planning at various stages of professional and parental life;

  2. Strategies: Virtues and tactics for getting the most out of our time, both at work and at home;

  3. Sanity: Methods for defending rest and achieving a happy life.

A-KID-EMIA is hosted by Charlotte Duffee, a mom of four and an interdisciplinary researcher at Harvard and the Elm Institute. In Podcast Episodes, she courts the opinions of scholars from across the academy with varying levels of seniority, while her Posts share her own answers to parent-scholar challenges.
